About the Hunter

The Hunter is Australia’s largest regional economy and has long been the engine room that powers the nation. As Australia moves towards net zero, the region is undergoing an economic transformation, creating new industries, jobs and opportunities.

As the Hunter’s economy changes, new opportunities are arising in renewable energy, manufacturing and construction.

New industries and projects

The Hunter is primed to take advantage of the net zero transition. It has the workers, the infrastructure, a world class port, import and export markets, the skills and know-how.

Solar

Australia is a step closer to manufacturing more reliable renewables at home. The $1 billion Solar Sunshot was created to manufacture more reliable renewables onshore. Australia has always been a solar powerhouse and one in three Australian households have solar – the highest take-up in the world.

Regional plans

The Hunter will see a number of coal-fired power stations and mines close over the coming decades. The Australian Government aims to make sure workers and communities are supported when major facilities close to make sure downside impacts are minimised.

The Authority is supporting the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to develop Regional Workforce Transition Plans. These plans will provide transition supports to workers, their families and communities that are significantly impacted by facility closures.

In the lead up to a power station closing in a region, we will also undertake an assessment process. The assessment will determine if extra support is needed for power station workers under the Energy Industry Jobs Plan.
