From energy heartland to innovation and training hub
The Hunter has powered Australia for generations. As our energy system changes, the Hunter is emerging as a centre for innovation, advanced manufacturing, training opportunities and sustainable industry.
The Net Zero Economy Authority (NZEA) is working closely with Hunter communities to help ensure the energy transformation creates jobs for local workers and businesses feel supported.
Opportunities are already taking shape through projects like the Hunter Valley Solar Foundry, a new, advanced manufacturing facility producing lightweight solar panels.
Construction of the facility is expected to create up to 200 jobs, with another 100 ongoing roles once operational.
Innovative business MGA Thermal is also looking to fast track the commercialisation of its thermal energy storage technology, with a further $3.25 million in funding granted in February.
MGA Thermal is one of several businesses in the Hunter looking at new and innovative forms of energy and energy storage.
Education and training are also central to the transformation.
The TAFE NSW Hunter Net Zero Manufacturing Centre of Excellence will help deliver the advanced manufacturing, renewable energy and digital skills needed for the jobs of tomorrow. Enrolments are now open and courses will begin in Semester 2, 2026.
Meanwhile, the University of Newcastle’s New Energy Skills Hub is preparing students with hands-on training and industry partnerships designed to accelerate Hunter’s transition to a new energy economy.
The Hunter has a strong future. One that is focussed on skills, innovation and jobs in new industries.
The NZEA is backing these new industries and the workers that drive them.
