Australia is undergoing a major economic transformation as we transition to net zero emissions. This shift is reshaping how we power our homes, grow our industries, and support our communities. As coal and gas give way to clean energy like wind and solar, new industries are emerging - bringing fresh opportunities, especially in regional areas.
Our job is to ensure no one is left behind.
We work alongside workers, businesses and communities to navigate change with practical support, trusted information and a long-term focus on local prosperity.
What is the net zero transition?
The goal is to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. This means we will no longer contribute additional greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.
This economic shift involves expanding our energy system and transitioning from coal and gas-fired power to renewable sources such as wind and solar. This will bring new clean energy to homes and businesses.
Some heavy industries will adapt, while new ones will emerge, leveraging clean energy generation and Australia’s abundant mineral resources.
This transition represents a nationwide opportunity for investment and job creation, particularly in regional areas.
Why it's happening
To address climate change and strengthen our economy, Australia is reducing greenhouse gas emissions through a major transformation.
To reach net zero by 2050, we’re expanding our energy system and shifting from coal-fired power to renewable energy like wind and solar. This will bring cleaner power to homes and businesses.
What we do
Supporting workers and communities affected by the transition to net zero to prosper.
Our responsibilities
As Australia moves away from emissions-intensive industries, we are focused on ensuring no community is left behind. This means working with people on the ground to identify new opportunities, grow skills, and secure the long-term economic future of their regions.
We are a trusted national voice, helping government and communities make informed decisions, and shaping policies that support local solutions in a global shift.
Our core responsibilities
Support workers
We support workers from coal and gas industries to prepare for what’s next - with access to training, career advice, and pathways into good jobs that are safe, secure and meaningful. We know people want more than promises - they want real options. That’s what we’re here to deliver.
Support communities
Our work recognises the unique fabric of each community. We focus on regions where change is happening fastest, helping families, local leaders, and businesses plan together for a strong, thriving future.
Engage with First Nations
We work in partnership with First Nations peoples to ensure their voices are heard, and that they benefit from new economic opportunities. This includes recognising Indigenous knowledge and leadership in shaping Australia’s energy future.
Support businesses
We help businesses navigate the transition and support their employees through it. Whether you’re part of the energy sector, a supply chain, or a business impacted by the shift to net zero, we work with you to plan ahead, upskill talent, and find new opportunities in a changing economy.
Facilitate investment
We help bring investment into regions that have powered Australia for generations - opening doors for new industries and quality local jobs. Our role is to make it easier to invest in projects that drive economic growth and support the national shift to net zero.
Our policies and reports
Australia’s transformation to a net zero economy is already underway and our policies are focused on ensuring people in affected regions are supported every step of the way.
Regional Identification Framework
Regional communities play a pivotal role in shaping the country’s economic future.
We have developed a comprehensive, evidence-based framework to advise the Australian Government on which regions to prioritise for support and investment.
Significant investment will help drive the development of new industries and create local job opportunities.
This approach is tailored to each region’s unique strengths and challenges, and is developed in close collaboration with local communities and stakeholders.
Policies and programs
The Australian Government supports workers, communities and workers through a large number of policies, programs, services and other initiatives.
We're working with other agencies to categorise and track these policies and programs, as their successful implementation is crucial to setting Australia up for a successful transition to a net zero economy.
Energy Industry Jobs Plan
The Energy Industry Jobs Plan (the EIJP) provides support directly to workers to prepare for and transition into a new job when eligible coal-fired or gas-fired power stations close.
Regional Workforce Transition Plans
Regional Workforce Transition Plans will help coordinate employment and skills supports to enable regions to manage the impact of closures while maximising the benefits of the transition.
