Eraring consultation submissions published

Eraring power station

Written submissions for the public consultation process on whether an Energy Industry Jobs Plan (EIJP) should be applied to businesses impacted by the closure of Eraring Power Station have been published. Eraring Power Station is a black coal-fired power station located approximately 40 km south of Newcastle, scheduled to close in August 2027.

The Authority thanks all involved in the consultation process and those who made a submission, which will help to inform the CEO of the Authority’s decision on whether to apply to the Fair Work Commission. Submissions are available to read on our consultation hub.

As part of our consultation process, the Authority visited the Hunter region to meet with unions, local businesses, government and community leaders. During the Authority’s time in the Hunter, representatives also conducted a site visit to Origin Energy’s Eraring Power Station to meet with management and workers.

The EIJP provides support to workers when eligible coal and gas-fired power stations close. If the CEO deems an EIJP is necessary, we will apply to the Fair Work Commission (FWC) for a determination specifying the companies the EIJP should apply to. The FWC will then conduct its process, including providing key stakeholders with an opportunity to be heard. If the FWC makes a determination, it places obligations on employers named in the determination to provide transition supports such as access to training, career planning and financial advice.

If you have any further questions about the EIJP or the consultation process, contact the team at EIJP@pmc.gov.au.
