About the Latrobe Valley

For more than a century, the Latrobe Valley and broader Gippsland region has been a powerhouse for Victoria and generated electricity to the National Electricity Market.

Whilst the building and operation of power stations and associated coal mines are a source of pride for the people of Latrobe Valley, the region offers a range of economic opportunities for the community, including in new energy and energy transition services, health services, agriculture and tourism.

Regional supports

Find out what plans and support is available for the workers, businesses and communities across Latrobe Valley. To find out more about general supports for workers go to our Workers page.

Regional Plans

The Latrobe will see a number of coal-fired power stations and mines close over the coming decades. The Australian Government aims to make sure workers and communities are supported when major facilities close to make sure downside impacts are minimised.

The Authority is supporting the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to develop Regional Workforce Transition Plans. These plans will provide transition supports to workers, their families and communities that are significantly impacted by facility closures.

In the lead up to a power station closing in a region, we will also undertake an assessment process. The assessment will determine if extra support is needed for power station workers under the Energy Industry Jobs Plan.

The following supports are available in the Latrobe Valley.
