Powering Latrobe and Gippsland’s next chapter

The Latrobe Valley and broader Gippsland region has long been recognised as the heart of Victoria’s energy sector.

Today, the region is writing a new chapter: one focused on local jobs, innovation, advanced manufacturing and new forms of energy.

The Net Zero Economy Authority (NZEA) is working closely with communities in Latrobe and the broader Gippsland region. Together, we are helping make sure the energy transition creates jobs for local workers and that businesses feel supported.

Opportunities are already taking shape through projects like Latrobe Magnesium, Australia’s first magnesium production plant using fly ash from brown coal-fired power stations.

This innovative approach to recycling industrial waste is helping to create new regional jobs and future opportunities. It is also supported by broader critical minerals developments across Gippsland which is expected to strengthen Australia’s processing capability and supply chains.

Large-scale battery projects are also helping cement the region’s role in Australia’s changing energy system. The Hazelwood Battery, developed at the former Hazelwood Power Station site, is now one of the largest batteries in the Southern Hemisphere.

Other projects like the Delburn Wind Farm and Marinus Link are also bringing construction jobs to the area while helping secure the region’s long-term place in the energy sector.

Training and skills development are essential to the future of the region. Initiatives like Tradeswomen Australia’s Powering Her Pathway are helping to open doors for more women to enter energy, construction and trades industries.

The NZEA understands that the community wants certainty, secure jobs, and confidence that their region can prosper as the energy system changes. We are working to ensure the right projects and pathways continue to be developed.

Latrobe and broader Gippsland region has a solid future built on skills, innovation and jobs in new industries

The NZEA is backing these new industries and the workers who drive them.
