About this page
This page is for those people affected or interested by the transition to net zero for the Upper Spencer Gulf region of South Australia.

About the Upper Spencer Gulf
The towns of Whyalla, Port Augusta and Port Pirie are major industrial centres in the Upper Spencer Gulf and are hubs for surrounding communities.
The Upper Spencer Gulf region has the renewable energy resources and minerals required to support Australia’s net zero transition and the potential to help reindustrialise the region, bringing new jobs and business opportunities to surrounding communities.

New industries and projects
South Australia is rich in renewable energy resources – both solar and wind – and has experienced some of the fastest growth in renewable energy capacity installation in Australia. It has extensive magnetite iron ore reserves well suited for low emissions (green) iron and steel production. It also has extensive copper resources, demand for which is expected to increase due to its importance as an input to electrical technologies, like electric vehicles, needed for the transition to net zero.
The South Australian Government has launched its State Prosperity Project, which envisions a reindustrialised future in the Upper Spencer Gulf. It seeks to capitalise on the state’s natural advantages to underpin the development of hydrogen exports, green iron and steel production, and a range of other net zero industries.
The Upper Spencer Gulf is an area of focus for the Authority due to its potential to capture the opportunities arising from the net zero transition. It has a strong industrial history with existing iron and steel making facilities and port infrastructure.
The Authority will seek to work closely with the South Australian Government, local communities, and industry stakeholders to understand the opportunities and challenges that the net zero transition presents for the Upper Spencer Gulf.
Hydrogen
Australia has the potential to be a world leader in green hydrogen production and export. When hydrogen is made using renewable electricity, the result is a carbon-free fuel. South Australia’s world class renewable energy resources give the state a competitive edge in the race to supply clean, green, renewable hydrogen.
