Support and obligations

AGL workers

The Fair Work Commission has decided that AGL Energy Ltd and AGL Torrens Island Pty Ltd employees at Torrens are covered by an EIJP.  AGL now has legal obligations under the Net Zero Economy Authority Act 2024 (Cth) to provide support.

How to access support

  1. Talking to your employer

Your employer will explain what support is available and how to apply for training or advice.

  1. Checking your transition plan

If you have an individual transition plan, use it to guide what training or advice you need.

  1. Speaking to your union

Your union has an important role under the legislation in advocating your rights and monitoring how AGL is supporting you.

  1. Using official channels

Visit the Net Zero Economy Authority website for updates and resources.

Contact the Energy Industry Jobs Plan team at EIJP@pmc.gov.au for questions.

  1. Staying informed

Look out for information sessions, transition expos, and updates from your employer and unions.

Torrens Island B Power Station employers

AGL Energy LTD and AGL Torrens Island Pty Ltd have obligations that apply as of 20 November 2025. On this date, the Fair Work Commission determined that Torrens is covered by the Energy Industry Jobs Plan. The EIJP places obligations on AGL under the Net Zero Economy Authority Act 2024 (Cth).

Even though AGL is already providing support to employees, the EIJP creates legal obligations to provide support, including:

  • Engagement: ask each employee if they want help finding work elsewhere (opting in as a ‘participating employee’)
  • Career and financial advice: arrange or pay for advice to help workers plan for their future.
  • Training support: contribute to the cost of training.
  • Flexible work arrangements or paid time off: allow workers to attend training, interviews, financial and career planning sessions, using flexible work arrangements or paid time off to do so.
  • Engage with unions and new employers: work with unions and potential employers to help workers move into new roles.
  • Cooperation: work with the NZEA, including providing information that we ask for.

There are potential penalties for employers who don’t meet their obligations under an EIJP. Theycan be subject to civil penalties and injunctions or required to pay compensation to workers.

What does AGL need to do:

  • Keep workers informed about available support.
  • Provide financial and career advice, training support, and flexible work arrangements, including contributing to the costs of these supports.
  • Consult with employees and their representatives when developing policies and procedures.
Receiving employers

The Authority is building a pool of local employers who are interested in potentially hiring Torrens Island workers when they become available as the power station closes. The Authority will also assist employers to connect with workers through a dedicated jobs board and will be able to provide additional incentives to employers offering opportunities for impacted workers.

We’re continuing to consult local businesses across industries such as energy, defence, infrastructure, and resources. If your business is interested in hiring workers from Torrens Island at an appropriate time, you can contact NZEA at EIJP@pmc.gov.au.
