Sumitomo’s Yarwun Hydrogen Calcination Pilot Demonstration Program
Rio Tinto and Summit Hydrogen Gladstone (SHG), a subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, will jointly deliver a project that will demonstrate the production of hydrogen and operation of hydrogen fuelled calcination for process heating at Rio Tinto’s Yarwun alumina refinery.
The Project aims to validate the use of hydrogen for calcination processes, and in doing so, will support the establishment of the Gladstone hydrogen industry. Construction began in 2024, with the hydrogen plant and calciner to be operational in 2025. If successful, the program could pave the way for global adoption of this technology.
The Project has received $32.1 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).
