Records set in state wind energy
On Tuesday, 24 June 2025, a record was set in Victoria for the highest amount of energy generated from wind.
A record breaking 94,586 MWh of power was generated from wind energy in Victoria, providing 60% of Victoria’s electricity demand.
The graph below shows when records were broken for wind energy generation in Victoria. Few records were broken between 2010 and 2011, but with significant investment from the private and public sector, wind records continue to be broken into 2025. In fact, it took only four years for the record to go from 47,000 MWh to 94,000 MWh.
Wind energy will play a significant role in reducing Australia’s emissions and reaching net zero by 2050. The recent increase in wind generation has already played a considerable role in lowering emissions across the National Energy Market – the electricity grid covering the eastern and southern states.
Currently, much of the wind energy generation is in western Victoria. However, proposed onshore and offshore projects could offer real opportunities to further increase wind energy generation capacity across broader Victoria.
The Delburn Wind Farm, in the Net Zero Economy Authority’s priority area of Latrobe, is a new wind farm to be constructed overlooking the former Hazelwood mine site. The project is one of many that sees areas transformed from mining and coal-fired power to renewable energy sites. The 33 turbines to be constructed are expected to generate 205MW of clean energy to the grid.
Offshore wind developer, Star of the South developed the Offshore Wind Supplier Showcase, which highlights the supply opportunities in the local area to give major wind suppliers a glimpse of what local businesses have to offer. Star of the South is an offshore wind project, proposed off the coast of Gippsland, Victoria.
As offshore wind projects typically need to secure around 10 main contracts, with further downstream opportunities in construction, electrical and mechanical services, these projects may offer a range of economic opportunities for the local regions supporting the projects.
The roll-out of wind and other forms of renewable energy generation increasingly creates supply and job opportunities for Australian businesses.
