NZEA Board Communique May 2026

27 May 2026

The Net Zero Economy Authority (NZEA) Board held its 10th meeting in Canberra.

Senior officials from across the Commonwealth joined the Board for a strategic discussion to inform NZEA priorities as it pivots from planning to delivery.

The Board welcomed participation from secretaries and senior leaders from the:

  • Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR)
  • Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DISR)
  • Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW)
  • National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA)
  • Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts (DITRDCSA)
  • Department of Defence
  • Treasury
  • Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C).

The Board valued the opportunity to strengthen connections and build a shared understanding of the operating environment through the roundtable discussion with Commonwealth colleagues.

Discussions explored opportunities for greater alignment with and collaboration across portfolios and considered how the NZEA can best deliver transition outcomes for workers, communities and regions and the importance of supply side measures, such as the community benefit principles, and demand side measures to drive investment in the priority regions.

Board members also participated in a structured strategic discussion focused on how the NZEA should be positioned over the next 2 years, drawing on members’ expertise, pre-reading material and insights from the morning’s discussions.

The Board discussed the importance of shifting the Authority’s focus from planning to delivery, with conversation centred on investment attraction, regional transition opportunities and practical implementation pathways. Members highlighted the importance of place-based approaches, coordination across governments and identifying opportunities to support practical outcomes for workers, industries and communities in transition regions.

The Board also discussed the value of continuing strategic engagement sessions and maintaining strong relationships across the Commonwealth to support collaboration and delivery.

The next scheduled Board meeting will be held in June in the Hunter region, New South Wales.
