Electrifying the future of mining in the Hunter

Even before he took up his first full-time job in engineering, student Finlay Barnett was already exploring how emerging technologies could support the Hunter region as part of the net zero transformation.

Born in the UK and raised in Newcastle, Finlay developed a passion for team sports, mathematics, and problem-solving while attending St Philip’s Christian College in Waratah. As an undergraduate at the University of Newcastle, he gained hands-on experience at Hunter based industrial research agency ResTech-a collaboration between the university and engineering firm Ampcontrol designed to provide students with industry exposure, practical skills and industry connections to thrive in the workplace.

Hands on experience with real world impact

During his 10-week placement at ResTech, Finlay worked on the Quantifying the Properties of Electric Arcs project. This led to an invitation to present at the 2023 Mine Electrical Safety Conference in Brisbane. An opportunity that significantly shaped his early career.

'I was incredibly fortunate,' Finlay reflects. 'Being invited to present at the premier industry conference at just 20 years old was an unreal experience. It gave me the chance to learn from and connect with leading experts in the field.'

Joining a leader in renewable energy solutions

After graduating with a Bachelor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering with First Class Honours, Finlay joined Ampcontrol in early 2025. The Tomago-based company is a leader in electrical engineering innovation, delivering energy solutions that support industry decarbonisation and drive Australia’s net zero transition.

Established in 1968 as Hunter Engineering Sales, Ampcontrol has grown to become a leader in custom innovations and energy solutions. Among its services, it provides the mining industry with the technology and support to electrify operations and meet decarbonisation targets.

Driving electrification in mining

Finlay and Ampcontrol are home-grown success stories with eyes on the future. Now 22, Finlay is focused on advancing electrification solutions for diesel-powered mining equipment which help the sector to reduce emissions and operate more sustainably.

'I’ve always wanted to make a meaningful contribution to local industry,' he says. 'With the shift towards net zero in the Hunter, there’s never been a more exciting time to work in this space.'
