Collie Battery Energy Storage System
The Collie Battery Energy Storage System (CBESS) is operated by state-owned utility Synergy. It's Synergy’s third BESS and one of the biggest in the world. The 500 MW/2,400 MWh CBESS is capable of powering the equivalent of about 785,000 homes for over 4 hours.
Key facts
- Location: CBESS is located in Collie, just over 200 km south-east of Perth, next to the Collie Power Station on Boys Home Road.
- Capacity: 500 MW / 2.4 GWh
- Benefits: The CBESS captures excess wind and solar power, then redistributes it to the South West Interconnected System (SWIS) during peak demand or when renewable energy generation is low. This is expected to support grid reliability as Western Australia moves toward retirement of state-owned coal generation by 2030.
