Alpha HPA Project
Alpha HPA has secured $400 million in financing to deliver Australia’s first large-scale high-purity alumina production facility in Gladstone, Queensland.
The HPA First Project will become one of the world’s largest single-site manufacturing facilities of ultra-high purity aluminium materials, with capacity to produce more than 10,000 tonnes per year.
Key Facts
- Location: Gladstone, Central Queensland
- Stage One Jobs: 70 full-time roles (40% women), powered by renewable energy
- Stage Two Jobs: Around 120 additional ongoing roles and over 300 construction roles
- Environmental Benefits: Produces ultra-high purity aluminium materials essential to global decarbonisation technologies
- Website: Visit the Alpha HPA Projects website
Recently, the NZEA’s Senior Investment Advisor, Ali Bahramzadeh, visited the facility as part of our broader engagement work across Central Queensland.
The project is being delivered in two stages:
Stage One HPA First Project
Already in small commercial scale production, the Stage One facility is the first commercial application of Alpha HPA’s Smart SX (solvent extraction) and refining technology to produce ultra-high-purity aluminium precursor materials.
- Operates 24/7
- Powered by 100% renewable energy
- Supports 70 full-time local jobs, with 40% held by women
Stage Two HPA First Project
Stage Two will expand production to full commercial volumes, with the site continuing to run on renewable energy.
- 120 additional ongoing full-time roles once operational
- More than 300 jobs supported during construction
A recent $20 million contract award for major concrete works marks a key milestone and continues construction momentum.
This facility strengthens Australia’s strategic capability in producing high-purity alumina, a critical material used in LED lighting, smartphone and television displays, synthetic sapphire, and lithium-ion battery components. The project will also drive new export opportunities and long-term economic development in the Gladstone region.
