A $2 billion investment in green metals

Last updated: 21 Jan 2025

The Net Zero Economy Authority welcomes the announcement of $2 billion in funding to support Australian smelters to produce green aluminium.

Australia is the sixth largest producer of aluminium in the world. The Green Aluminium Production Credit will assist Australian aluminium smelters who are taking steps to decarbonise and transition to net zero by 2050.

Aluminium is widely used to build renewable energy platforms and is a critical component in solar panels, batteries, wind turbines and transmission systems.

The Net Zero Economy Authority's primary role is to support the regions, workers, and communities most affected by Australia’s shift to a net zero emissions economy.

We are supporting workers in emissions intensive industries to access new employment and new skills.

The Authority supports this initiative to drive Australian manufacturing in the Australian aluminium industry.

Investment in green metals is critical for the net zero transition, enabling energy-intensive metal manufacturing - such as steel and aluminium - to shift to renewable energy. This transition not only helps future-proof existing regional jobs but also positions Australia to gain a comparative trade advantage as global demand for green metals continues to grow.

The Authority also welcomes the job certainty that accompanies this initiative in regions with aluminium smelters including Tomago New South Wales, Boyne Queensland, Portland Victoria and Bell Bay Tasmania.

The Australian Government estimates the aluminium sector currently employs, both directly and indirectly, approximately 13,000 people.

Both private and public investment are essential to achieving net zero by 2050 with investment in green metals part of the transition.
